Do you ever wonder why babies have the cutest smiles? Even though it is completely visible that they are absolutely oblivious of the world they have been born into. It is however beautiful because ignorance they say is bliss.
In all of that, the struggle to capture those blissful moments and keep them stored forever is indeed real. Like how can something so beautiful drive you crazy? We only get to see that with grown-ups and relationships. But babies are in a world of their own and you can only but try to get them accustomed to this one.
When photographing newborns, there are a ton of things that need to be put in place as it is not the regular kind of photography. A newborn would require tending to and most times it is the photographer’s job to make the baby feel comfortable.
With Newborns, the possibility of getting a portrait worthy picture is endless with of course the right equipment and skill set. From the props needed for such a shoot to the theme down to the convenience of the baby, the photographer will need to take care of all that.
A major factor in photography for Newborns is the time these sessions should be scheduled. The age of the baby is a major determinant of the success of the shoot.
5 to 12 Days old
Photography for babies that are 5 to 12 days old has been considered the most interesting and very successful so far. The reason for this is the fact that the baby is more likely to sleep all through the session affording the photographer the opportunity to pose her however he may choose to. It gives the photographer the time and freedom to be creative without the fear of making the baby uncomfortable.
Babies younger than 5 days tend to be very uncomfortable and giddy maybe because they’re still trying to adjust to the new world. They tend to cry more and it may be unwise to remove their clothes because they need all the warmth they can get at that time.
Above 2 weeks
Some parents naturally wouldn’t want to expose their newborn to the flash from a camera and are disapproving of such. They would also prefer to bond with their baby during the early days and would only want to photograph them when they are about 4 weeks or even six weeks old. They only just need pictures and don’t mind if their baby isn’t curled up. Babies above 2 weeks are more likely to be awake throughout the whole session. They do not like their clothes taken off and they most definitely will not curl up. Sometimes you might even need to use handheld shots where the baby refuses to stay put.
It is safe to say that the most convenient time for photographing Newborns is when they are 5 to 12 days new. In all of these, the safety of the baby is paramount and should be prioritized.
